re-excited.
is it galle, or it is galle - lonely planet pronounces it as 'garr-lee' while rough guide pronounces it as 'gaul' - this resulted in many many many conflicting pronunciations when we were discussing our post-project travel plans yesterday. some went the lonely planet way while i insisted on 'gaul' and some hybridized it into 'golly'. whee, haha.
im re-excited about sri lanka because perhaps my hasty judgement of them was exactly the antithesis of how i wanted
them to judge I. i should have given them more time. after spending the whole day at meetings and dinner with them, i have somewhat revised my opinion. even though they still talk to me about my
hair quite a fair bit, i've humbly admitted to being the most inexperienced of the lot, and probably the most pampered and least outdoorsy of them and they have been oddly encouraging. im encouraged :] and i guess it also helps that we're all psyched up about the travel plans.
a group of us is intending to head up to galle, the old dutch quarter complete with a fort. and then to kandy, the sublimal hill country in central sri lanka. and sigiraya too, a world heritage site consisting of the archeologitcal remains of a shortlived medieval capital. how cooool is that!! yay!

amongst the other more interesting nuggets of information, the system pronounced me to be -
a beta academic archetype"You are a long-term planner, diligent worker and avoid risk as much as possible. You are of above average intelligence and have the ability to focus on tasks that seem unimportant at present, but can lead to greater things in the foreseeable future. You are not keen to interact with others or make social connections. You would rather gain material wealth before putting yourself in a position to be judged. You are not confrontational unless someone directly opposes your intellectual beliefs. You are highly concerned with your social status. You are keen to avoid risks that could jeopardize your long-term plans. You take a calculated approach to life, working hard to control all aspects of it in order to not leave anything important to chance.
You tend to be a perfectionist and quite self-conscious. You sometimes wish you were less reserved and more like some others you see who are more bold and outspoken in social situations. But as much as you try to be like them, you cannot, because you care too much about the future to ever be comfortable taking risks in social situations."
its pretty much a way of saying im anal, but it strikes rather true. hehe, like how i always have to psyche myself to act 'normally' i.e. be sociable, friendly and accommmodating while all the time wishing i had the blessed easygoingness of some other people i know.

chiangrai.
in short, zh and i tranversed 500 km of rolling hills, tea plantations, landslided areas, super highways, villages, hot springs and flirted outrageously with the burma border lines. we hit the kuomintang outpost of mae salong where politics reign free, we landed ourselves at the opiumy golden triangle, we stepped foot onto myanmar on one-day visa, we gazed at burma constantly because my dear bf is so besotted with the idea that the yabaa factories are just mountains away - so much so that we were prone to fly off the mountains any minute.
from chiangrai, we went up to chiang sean, then sop ruak (the golden triangle), then mai sai (the myanmar crossing), then doi tung, then mae salong, then doi luang, then thaton, then doi larng, then finally back to chiangrai where we shall blissfully sleep tonight.

chiangmai.
what makes this city tick is not the imperceptible pace of life, but the very perceptible friendliness of the people. the famous thai hospitality that people exclaim at when they hit bangkok cannot be compared to these chiangmai-ers. on our way up to doi suthep this afternoon, we got a tyre puncture and what proceeded was amazing. people gave us suggestions, a few folks on their way up promised to send us some help and finally a dude with a lorry came and hauled our bike onto the back of his lorry and brought us all the way down the mountain so we could get our tyre repaired. the mechanics charged us hello, hello, 20baht - that's less than a dollar! - for repairs and we got our chaa yen at the cheapest we've come across yet - 7 baht. and the opium that we reckon the thais put into their tea to make it so addictive could be pandan syrup, i discovered today.
hope everyone's doing fine at home. my sister got an A1 for her science paper. whee, i think i can renegotiate for a raise in tuition fees when i get back. im so proud of my little student.

is out there. it is a lazy mind that thinks there's nothing else to do. it is the stoned spirit that insists that all the revolutions have happened already. it is the modernized logic that harks back to history and lists down year by year all the revolutions that have happened and backfired. it takes someone dreamy and intelligent to effect change i guess. the rest of us sit here and exclaim sadly that there's nothing monumental left in this world to do.

i need people that actually believe in me. i thought i had wonderful ideas for the pageant.
first since it was going to be held at the legends at fortcanning, i wanted an english tea party feel to it, with daintily-wrought white-cast iron tables and chairs and lawn croquet and beautiful hats
since we dont have the resources for
that, i dreamt up a pageant segment that had the girls wearing simple black cocktail dresses with lavish hats. look no further than the races for inspiration, and nafa or lasalle for some deals.
somehow no one is perceiving (the beauty) the way i do.
and now i learn that for casual segment, guess is sponsoring our contestants. heyhey. guess, guess waddya know - paris hilton! so i think the girls should do a paris hilton and walk down cuddling a cute little chihuahua. or walking one. almost like a legally blonde moment.
why do i feel that my ideas are larger than life? or for nussu at least :[ i should just stop thinking and getting excited about my own ideas, for they leave me disappointed. sigh. but then again, i hate doing things im unexcited about.

an innane and secret desire to be the most classic oldie couple of our generation, we spent the day at the library when we were just swearing an aversion a week before.
ha,ha. libraries..ocular devices.. - i just rewatched national treasure with my brother. i love it, and i love dan brown and im absolutely dying to get the illustrated dan brown hardcovers. after that, i watched channel 16 on cable, bbc's world travel channel, and boy, my insatiation with destinations just piques again. i want to wake up in zesty lime brazil, i want to let goa arrest me with more myriad of colors (always a recurring fantasy), and i want to see the muslim-christian architecture in jerusalem. even sri lanka sounds fascinating at this point. the land of tea and spices. colonised by the dutch the british the malays which invariably contributed to the clandestine mesh of influences.
im so glad im going to the mekong. im going to bangkok to buy cheap cotton pants any backpacker would be proud off. im going up to chiangmai to see long-necked tribes and 'the real thailand'. then we're going up further to chiangrai! to see 'the real thailand that is even more real than chiangmai'. then off to mai sai; to the golden triangle, to step on soil that intricately and yet simply links myanmar, laos and thailand. im going to cross burmese borders and see that famously repressive government. im going to throw tourist dollars at private enterprises that guide books specifically point out so that your money goes to the people, and not to the government.
i learnt all these and more while reading guide books at the library. i like the way we lead our lives. its meaningful and real :]

she was seen dashing around greenwich village wearing floppy hats, huge sunglasses, dust-catcher skirts and street-sweeping cable-knit cardigans. this! this is the look i want!
as fall turned to winter and edged toward spring, ms. olsen, 18, pushed her version of ashcan chic to emphatic extremes, an evolution charted by glossy magazines that snoop on stars in everyday activities. the look became dottier and dottier, until it morphed into a kind of homeless masquerade, one that was accented by subtle luxuries like a cashmere muffler, a balenciaga lariat bag and of course her signature carryout latte from starbucks
just months ago, "stylish young women used to wear gucci or prada head to toe," ms. berenson said. otday they are more apt to be seen at supermarkets or parties toting a beat-up chloe bag, their eyes shaded by enormous, high-priced laura biaggiotti sunglasses, the faint suggestion of opulence hidden beneath chadorlike layers of cashmere and ankle-length peasant skirts.
the new look has acquired a name: bobo style. "you know, bohemian bourgeois," explained kathryn neal, 28, a freelance writer in new york, who is partial to billowing alexander mcqueen pirate shirts worn with beat-up jeans. "bobo" is borrowed from the title of a five-year-old work of pop sociology, "bobos in paradise" by david brooks, now an op-ed columnist for the new york times. he used the term to describe a breed of well-heeled consumers who bashed materialism while embracing all manner of luxury. thats it.
bobo. (liwern: new catchphrase!)
this look requires work though. it best suits an anorexic body and perfectly disheveled yet painstakingly highlighted hair.
this bobo movement is making cultural ripples too. the real bohemians are arguing that the real deal is about a frustration with the class system and about making everything you do not about money.
and on the holy-money-guacamole side, the bobo cheap chic look is in fact knocking down cash registers over at suzanne juul's beverly hills offices ever since the designer's circular scarves, called 'eternity shawls', appeared on the neck of the teenage sensation olsen. what better way than to charge USD160 per pop for a look that appears shopworn but really is not cheap.
what a blend of consumerism and counterculture.

what happens when the exams have gloriously ended and hall life has come to a halt? my ever trusty & reliable nusnet connection vanishes, thats what. i cannot connect to my home wireless network and so i couldnt blog about the extended festivities of my 20th birthday which meant that all my happiness is chortled up inside me so lol lets now start in chronological order so i dont miss anything out.
on mambo day, i went clubbing with liwern and her 2 faithful boys whom at first were intended to be victims of her intricate and cunning ploy to get
them to buy drinks. but a couple of flaming lamborghinis later, my darling girl had the tables turned on herself and instead ended up getting tricked into splurging a century of bucks on 4 jugs of drinks, getting very very broke in the process. lol. highlights of the night - jugs of yummy malibu pineapple, liwern drunkenly insisting that this guy was daming (he wasnt), zh & i agreeing that we'd grow old together (already halfway there), lynn in a wicked leather piakpiak jacket, getting a set of estee lauder's beyond paradise from liwern & yiming :]
on thursday my birthday, i spent the day shifting a third of my stuff back home. and then, i went home for birthday cake, and was pretty much dateless. you see, my evil bf has decided that postponing his birthday isnt good enough. he has to postpone mine too! so in 2005, our birthdays are on the 7th of may. hur, hur.
then on friday night, i met my favorite aj girls at ambrosia with some other disgruntled boys tagging behind . i
swear, guys are missing the big picture. they obsess about how they're eating on their knees and that theres no aircon and that the menu does not typically list down hamburgers lambchops and spaghetti. they get amused by lamb sausages being called kafta and i cant even count the number of times they rolled 'shisch taou' around their mouths just for the kick of saying something foreign. lol but i wont deny i appreciate all of them for indulging me :] special mentions to becky who organised it, liwern who probably galvanised them into getting me this gorgeous paul & joe blusher & my perfect dad who drove from clarke quay back to nus to pick me up & send me to baghdad street.
and the last mention of the night? a movie date with zh :) he (hahahahahaha-oops) stepped on some dung or fertilizer on the way and we kept smelling this funny smell until somehow he decided to smell his own shoe and lo & behold, it was him! he had to run off and wash the 'waxy dung' off his shoe so he missed the front of kingdom of heaven which was a pity. because i dont think i explained the context of the film very well for him when he came back. ohwell, he knows the bible better than i do, so he's in a better stead. i liked saladin in the context of the show; he seemed to have warring ethics down pat.
7th may - the new improved version of our birthdays! :D we were
supposed to go shopping,
supposed to buy each other fanciful gifts; but we meandered at simpang for lunch for way too long and idly pored over the wonderful saturday papers until we both felt too lazy to budge. so we just decided to
skip the shopping and hit our dinner reservation at 830 instead. since it was our plural birthdays, :D we displayed great flair in compromise. we ate dinner at a meaty MEATY place. he lambchop, me sukiyaki beef, together carnivores. i even got to cook my own beef on this super hotskewer thing. zh enjoyed pressing down my beef with his fork so that the blood seeped out through the edges of his fork. alphamaleism. haha.
after we settled his penchant for hearty food, we headed over to forbidden city for my PRETTY COCKTAILS! *beam*beam* i had the terracotta, the butterfly effect and this malibu splice which had whippedcream on it. divine, divine oh i loved them all. and we were sitting in this platform chaise-like thing with pillows all over and a pink billowy curtains around us. and the entire place looked like a hedonistic imperial bourdoir. and to think i had wanted to get zh this antique opium pipe for his birthday; how apt that would be. then i got a lovely napkin rose from one of the floor staff and i felt beautiful and all that.. aww. haha yep i feel beautiful with zh :]
i loved my birthday. thankyou to all my loved ones!

is 13 days of examinations taking its toll on me? i feel dull, dreary, unshiny, unhappy and uninteresting. i feel like a housewife, except that i dont even have the privilege of walking the dog. im very much sure im pasty and horrible looking. lacklustre hair. cloudy eyes. eyebags that can flood the island. sigh. im going to go clubbing tomorrow and feel old and tired next to all the other gorgeous nubile young things. and im just an old mama hitting her 20s. i need some tlc :[

1. i shall not leave khaosan without getting corn-rows, dreadlocks or braids in order to show my open mindedness.
2. i shall wear at least one item of local clothing to show my oneness with the thai people.

never shave your moustache when you're on the phone. my paranoia about my invisible one scaled great heights when i accidentally almost shaved my mole off. it hurts like mad now, i think i dislodged a root of my famous mole. hurts :(

my dad lost a nice buck to the tax people at midnight. it all started when he couldnt file his taxes at his workplace. then he bugged me until i came back with the lappie at 10. strange, it couldnt connect wirelessly so i spent almost 20 minutes bugging zh about it, and then another hour with the technical support staff. no one could help so i finally had to find a cable to connect to the router. logged onto the mytax.iras.com.sg site. oh! we arent java enabled! how very odd. so i had to download it and it was taking such a long time. and by 11.48pm we were all panicking like hell. finally it got downloaded and then we keyed in everything, but microsoft kept error-ing us. by 11.57 we finally got through the
page and hellelujah, there was an error on the side of iras.
anyways. :] zh and i went to eat at the malaysian railway station yesterday! i will never ever forget the bestest ikan bilis nasi goreng & kambing soup we had. it is unfortunate that we didnt have space for dessert. argh, 2 days without desserts! keep it up any longer, and we will have one grumpy girl on the card. haha.
